Janvier

In 1223 Church, Morris East, Not-my-street-eats on January 27, 2011 at 10:37 am

This month has been delightful food wise. Earlier I ordered 10lbs of Daiya from Karmavore! That makes everything allllright.

I’ve been really into mac ‘n cheeze due to the winter weather, short days, and the simple fact that it is deeeeerichious!

Mac ‘n Daiya!

Mid month I got together with a friend who is living in San Francisco right now, just home visiting on a work trip. We went to Morris East for some tasty wood fired pizza. Always a pleasure.

Roasted Vegetable Pizza with extra onions

Then my friend Molly and I exchanged vegan boxes for the holidays. Chocolate Caramel popcorn, Mac-n-chip cookie, chocolate bars, gummi bunnies, and ginger mints! Check-check-check it out!!!

SWEET TREATS

Over the Holidays I found myself indulging in something dirty dirty dirty. Mr.Noodles.

When I realized what I did to myself I vowed to find a way to make hot, spicy, brothy noodles at home!

When I re-read what Meghan Telphner has to say about MSG, and all the other names MSG can be labelled as, it reignited my fuel for the fire! No more MSG for me.

So, this is what I make:

Hot Noodz, you got what I want.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Shimmer me timbers, baby! These noodles look fiiine.

Broth time!

Small pot – Med-High

2C H2O

1 T Braggs

1/2 tsp Sriracha

1/2 tsp Lemongrass Paste

1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger

1 T sugar

Once that gets to the boiling point take a small dish and mix 1T cornstarch and 2T water, mix this well until there are no clumps.

Pour into the broth mixture and stir in quickly. This will thicken it a tiny bit.

Meanwhile, you should have been cooking your skinny rice noodles or whatever tickles your fancy.

This is enough broth to pour over 2-3 bowls of noodles, depending on how brothy you like your noodz.

Convenience

In Not-my-street-eats, San Francisco on January 24, 2011 at 4:18 am

Oh, San Francisco, even your convenience stores blow all other corner stores out of the water and into the shameful depths of easy eats.

Just check out this selection!

Three types of MISO! Tofu! Udon nooodles! Sausages! Bacon! Vegenaise! FRIED TOFU.

Good graces, I bet they carry Daiya now! Sheesh. They would.

This Hayes Valley store even has a bulk section full of vegan delights.

Dark Chocolate Pretzels from Sunridge Farms. BULK!

See this jerky below? Well I thought “Hey! Maybe it’s as good as Primal Strips!” Nope. It has the quirkiest texture and not in a good way. Plus, it smells like canned chickpeas. Now we all know that canned chickpeas happen to smell like CAT FOOD so let’s connect the dots.

Stonewalls Jerquee!

Loki, the mancat of the house where I stayed in SF, l-o-v-e-d t-h-i-s s-h-i-t. Perhaps that may be the understatement of last year because this cat danced for Stonewall’s Jerquee. Never have his owners known Loki to be a dancer. Never, ever.

Upon returning home I left the brown paper bag unattended in the dining room only to quickly discover that Loki had torn into it and started to mow down on the chicken flavoured Jerquee! Holy bananas! It didn’t matter where I put this stuff, he would sniff it out. Oh, and he would dance. That cat is a natural. Eventually the Jerquee went in a bag, in a cookie jar, on top of a hutch. Even then, Loki tried to obtain said goods.

Ready made Seitan Sandwich!

REALLY? Yeah, really. They went there. A wide selection of pre-made seitan sammys! Just touch me all over, whydoncha?

At the counter they have vegan cookies galore!

My my my. How could any vegan in their right mind come out of there without feeling wild with excitement? I might as well have found a freaking shipwreck off the coast!

I’m on a roll! We’ve got a lot to cover until this blog is up-to-date.

NEXT!

Flouring

In 2061 North Park on December 18, 2009 at 2:30 pm

A very good friend bought me TWO KILOS of Organic All Purpose Spelt Flour because it was in the clearance for 50% off and I had no skrilla. Shame. Good thing my friends love my baking so much they voluntairily buy me discounted flour. Mmhmm.

This is most of the goods I made with it as of late:

Pancake Breakfast with S'nog!

“Perfect Pancakes” simple and sweet with a side of Maple Syrup and some S’nogged coffee!

CHEEZE BISCUITZ

Dad’s secret no-fail basic biscuit recipe with added cheddar Daiya. Oh, the Daiya is alllll through the inside, too. You know it. Life is good.

Blueberry Pancakes

Wild, organic, nutritious, delicious, Nova Scotian blueberries!

Bakery Style CCC's

I made these for my best friend Sammy when she was having a bad day. She’s a slut for my CCC’s.

Next- DAIYA.

Everything

In 2061 North Park on November 15, 2009 at 5:11 pm

These cookies were AWESOME. Sadly I ate about three of them and then I woke up and couldn’t taste anything. So I packaged them up and left them at my neighbours doors. Sigh. A few were saved for my friend Jordan who coined the name “The Everything Cookie”. My original plan was to make Oatmeal Raisin cookies because I thought my supply of *CC’s was down.  I found the recipe of choice from The Rabbit Food Cookbook and while compiling my dry ingredients it called for coconut! Coconut makes me go wild with love and excitement so naturally I remembered the vegan butterscotch chips that I have been sitting on. While digging those out I found about 1/4 cup of CC’s!

Annnd here they are:

Glorious.

On that day I also fixed myself some Avocado Piit-zzas on Ezekiel bread. Normally these look more like pizzas as they are meant to be prepared on pitas, hence the “Piit-zza” title. However, they are also quite tasty on Sesame Ezekiel.

Mashed garlic avocado, thin slices of red onion, shredded carrot drizzled in Asian Wassabi Oil, and dashed with freshly dried cilantro, S&P. Toasted in the oven until browned. Some day you’ll all get the deetz when I make them look proper on pita!

*Chocolate Chips

Backlogged

In 2061 North Park on October 27, 2009 at 2:50 pm

This is everything I thought to take a picture of from July until now:

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Isa’s NEW CCC recipe was utilised here. The one from her blog on The Post Punk Kitchen. These Chocolate Chip Cookies were made for a random Sunday in Summer Bake Sale on my front stoop.

Stacked Pancakes with Blueberry Strawberry syrup

Stacked Pancakes + Blueberry Strawberry Syrup

Summer breakfast of Champions. My own perfected pancake recipe with an improvised strawberry blueberry glaze. Genius, I know.

4 WIld Local Berry Coconut Crisp

Quadruple Berry Coconut Crisp

My dear friend Sarah landed in Halifax from Virginia, went out on the town, got slammed, came home completely smitten with the evening. We chattered and around 2am I had the brainstorm to make a Quadruple Berry Coconut Crisp with Crisp Crust! Alas, she passed out while I was making it and we ate it for many meals the next few days. Glorious.

UnicornPie

Unicorn Pie

No unicorns were harmed in the crafting of this pie, of course! The only treasures buried inside are high-bush and low-bush blueberries. Both berries are of the wild, organic Nova Scotian variety. The crust was made with Earth Balance shortening and Speerville Mills All Purpose Light Spelt flour.

There you have it, folks! My first post.
